Ascension Island is a small lonely island which lies in the South Atlantic , 7 50 S and 14 22 W, some 750 miles northwest from Saint Helena, another lonely island, and covers an area from 35 square miles.
It was discovered by the Portuguese seafarer Joao da Nova Castelia in 1501 and found again 2 years later on Ascension Day by Alphonse de Albuquerque, who gave the island its name.
Ascension is of volcanic origin with a subtropical climate, with warm temperatures averaging 25ēC-30ĒC all year round. According to statistics, it rains on about 280 days of the year, but mostly on the mountains, leaving a dry and barrel coastal strip

During the second World War, the United States of America set up an air force base there and at that time Ascension reached its greatest population of 4000 people. Britain also has an air force base there, which became one of the busiest airports in the world during the Falklands conflict in 1982.

Ascension is now an overseas territory which forms part of a single territorial grouping under the sovereignty of the British crown, and its population is of some 1000 people, mostly contract workers from St. Helena.
