Ascension Island Fishing
For years there has been a 200 mile exclusion zone, which has left Ascension Island with seas teaming
with fish which will attack anything thrown into the water. These stories have been told by sailors who have stopped there on their
way across the ocean.
The local fishermen, who have never fished further than 2 miles out in their
open boats with outboard engines, have always caught enough skipjacks and other smaller fish to feed their families. However, they complained that they often lost their catches to bigger fish which will eat them as it’s being reeled in.
In June 2002, Atlantic Fishing Charter arrived to Ascension Island for
the first time with a well equipped boat
and spent one week scouting the area for all sorts of catches, including billfish.
The results of that week, which was said to be low season for fishing, were very impressing, including blue marlin, sailfish, swordfish,
yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, wahoo, mako shark, thresher shark, tiger shark,
mahi mahi and a lot of other species. The fishing from the shore was also spectacular.
The following seasons and experiences in Ascension have only come to confirm that this is one of the hottest fishing destinations at present. Click here for more fishing news.
